The Dangers of Drinking and Driving

DWI Dangers An alcohol-impaired driver with a high BAC level represents an immediate danger to those on the roadway. It does not matter if the driver thinks he or she can safely and responsibly drive while in such a condition – the only that matters is that they represent a threat not only to themselves, but to others on the roadway. Driving while under the influence of alcohol and other intoxicating substances can not only result in traffic accidents resulting in devastating injuries and property loss, but also the death of one or several people. The death of an innocent bystander or fellow motorist in a DUI / DWI accident is the worst scenario that can be realized when dealing with the consequences of driving under the influence. Driving under the influence of alcohol and other substances remains a serious problem, resulting in the need for levying severe legal penalties for those whose alcohol levels are at or above the mandated maximum (.08 BAC).

Binge drinking is also a serious problem, since the consumption of large quantities of alcohol in such a short period of time can not only cause the BAC level to rise quickly and dangerously, as well as prevent them from driving safely due to the immediate loss of judgment and reasoning, but the health of the drinker is also put at risk since large quantities of alcohol can cause a person’s heart to stop. Largely seen in colleges and parties, the act of binge drinking can cause death, even before the drinker takes hold of a steering wheel.

Different people also respond differently to alcohol consumption. As mentioned before, height, weight and sex play a role in how alcohol consumption affects a person, and how quickly their BAC levels can surpass legal limits. A 5’ 8” 160 lb adult male can absorb and metabolize more alcohol than a 5’ 4” 100 lb adult female. There are other factors that can affect how a person is able to handle alcohol consumption, but make no mistake that anyone who consumes alcohol and decides to take a chance on the roads is also taking a chance with the lives of others out there on the roadways.
